What does the lotus means in tamil ? plz help immideatly?
LOTUS is a flower , of a water plant, known as Thamarai in Tamil , spelt 'THA- MA RAI'.
Reply:Lotus is called "Thaamarai" or "Kamalam" in Tamil
Reply:The English word lotus refers to a water species of plant with flower either red or white. The Tamil word is "taamarai"; the two respectively called "Senthaamarai""Venndaamara" .

The lotus has got esoteric symbolism in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist religions.

Indian devotional literature, including Tamil, is full of Roopak (uruvaham) and Upama (uvamai) alankar (aNi), metaphors, wherein lotus is used as simile or comparison to describe the beauty of various parts of the deity, face, hands, feet etc.

The Sanskrit Tatsama and Tadbhava mutations of :Ambuja, Kamala, Rajeeva, Kanja, Pankaja, Padma etc are used in Tamil devotional literature. Kanja word, occurs in "Sri Ramachandra Kripaalu" sloka of Ramacharitamanasa (Tulasidasji in Avadhi), and in Tiruppugazh of Arunagirinathar ( Kanjamalar senkaiyum sindu velum - Tiruppugazh starting with 'thandaiyani vendaiyum').

Bharati's poem "Vellait tamaraip poovil iruppal" addressed to Saraswati Devi is famous. In romantic film songs, the red lotus is likened to beloved as " Settril malarnda senthamaraiyo", "senthamaraiyo senthen idazho" etc.

The blue/violet variety of similar flower is called "Neelotpala" or "indeevara" in Sanskrit ans in Tamil as "aambal", from Sangam age. (neeralave ahumam neerambal-Naladiyar).

Lotus leaf is likened in spirituality to a status wherein the spiritualist, is exhorted to be off the affectations of the world while being in the world, like the lotus leaf while being in water always does not allow, the water to stick to it or moisten it. (Bhaja Govindam- 'Nalini dala gata salilam...'- Adi Shankaracharya). In Tamil the concept is commonly used in prose as 'tamarai ilait tanneer pol'. Also the Saiva scriptures and Viashnava Divya Prabhandam at several places use this comparison.

The word 'taamarai' has got mutated to 'taavare' in Kannada and is in use still.
