I try to save to my desktop, get a msg. "Cannot write to directory C:\documents and settings\pete\desktop". Clicking help,I get " make sure you have rights to that directory" Any Ideas? thanks, Pete
Why won't lotus notes let me save a wordpro document to my desk top?
It's being caused by some issue with folder permissions on your computer, though you may need some trial and error to figure out exactly what. If you're working in a corporate environment, the best bet would be to get your support people to sort it out.
If you're on your own here's some pointers. Windows keeps separate settings for each user on a computer, so that you, Pete, can have a different desktop, wallpaper, etc. to another person, Jane, who uses your computer. To preserve privacy, more recent Windows versions (2000, XP, Vista) only allow each user access to their own settings. So far, so good.
However, this system can get mucked up. For example, let's say your settings get corrupted because there's a power cut. Very often, the result is that there are several folders of settings, such as \pete and \pete2. Or there's a problem with your user account, and an admin removes it and recreates it, and the new account doesn't have access to some of the old folders.
Bottom line is: When you run Notes, your network account doesn't have access to C:\documents and settings\pete\desktop.
Here's some things to try:
1 Can you store a file on your desktop from another program?
2 Can you store a file in C:\documents and settings\pete\desktop from another program?
If you can't do (1) then access to your desktop is restricted, either because of a glitch, or because your corporate IT department doesn't want you messing with it.
If you can do (1) but not (2), then C:\documents and settings\pete\desktop is not your current desktop folder (probably an old copy), and you need to tell Notes to store the message elsewhere.
Let us know how you get on.
