What does a lotus mandala mean?

The lotus represents purity in ones actions and freedom from attachment. It floats on top of the muddy waters of desire, yet it's leaves are not made wet by them. In tantric mandalas the lotus circle is in the center, as it is the symbol for liberation.

The popular Sanscrit mantra "Om mani padme hum" : (OM the jewel in the lotus Hum") is here represented in mandala form. The mantra is in Tibetan script, written in the six lotus petals.

I think you got your answer. I just want to add that all sorts of wonderful realizations can come from contemplating nature. The Lotus has great symbolism. The blooming flower on the waters surface...the long stem reaching below the surface and the root way down there in the mud, unseen. There is a lot there forming a wonderful analogy for contempaltion.
